Hiking Around The World, One Trail At A Time

This time of year we all love to go on vacation and visit new cities and exciting places. This year, I decided to fulfill my goal to travel more and add more excitement to my life by going on amazing hiking trips. Hiking has been a great hobby for me for a few years. It began with hiking at the local state parks in North Georgia such as the Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville, GA to hiking internationally through the pyramids of Teotihuacan, Mexico.

Over the years, my desire to travel and hike outside the US has definitely grown. Therefore, I decided to create a list of best treks to hike around the world. If you love to be adventurous and are not afraid of spending time with a tour group for days, here is a great list to start with.

Name: Mt. Kilimanjaro

Where is it located: Tanzania

When to visit: July to October, or from December to February

Why it is a go to destination: Because there is nothing cooler than telling friends over happy hour chit chat that you climbed the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro? Hiking the Marangu route is one of the most popular routes despite the short acclimatization period on different trails. The average hiker can climb Mt. Kilimanjaro if he or she is in excellent health. There are so many treks, from the Marangu, Rongai, and Machame route, all planned according to day trips; you can choose between the 6 day route or 7 day route depending on your physical well being. The recommendation is to use the 7 day route to help avoid altitude sickness and do an acclimatization hike to prepare your body

Name: Atlas Mountains

Where is it located: Across Morocco, Algeria & Tunisia

When to visit: Autumn is the best time to visit, where you can see spectacular views in the valley

Why it is a go to destination: Serious mountain hikers and casual day beginner hikers will both be pleased with the views of North Africa’s popular mountain range. Along with learning more about the lives of the Berber people who live in the valleys, located near the village of Marrakesh, you will find several routes to trek in Toubkal National Park which contains the highest mountain peak at 13,671 ft (4,167 m) above sea level

Name: Grand Canyon National Park

Where is it located: Arizona, Colorado and stretches across other states

When to visit: March to May

Why it is a go to destination: At 277 miles (446 km) long you cannot imagine how far and wide the majestic scenery is with the naked eye talk-less of simply looking at pictures of it on a postcard. Visiting the Grand Canyon isn’t just for hiking — you can go on bike tours, helicopter rides, and if you are into that kind of thing, mule rides. For those who know how to work a camera, you have the opportunity to capture the best photography nature can show. Oh, did I mention it is one of the seven wonders of the world?

Name: Yosemite National Park

Where is it located: Northern California (United States)

When to visit: March to May

Why it is a go to destination: Yosemite has it all. It is known for its majestic waterfalls, nature, and unprecedented views. From  driving to see the tall redwoods at Mariposa Grove, to walking along the Tuolumne Valleys of the Meadows where you can see the snow capped mountains behind you, there is no way you  will not be disappointed. It is way to beautiful to describe in words.

Name: Mount Fitz Roy

Where is it located: Patagonia, right on the border between Argentina & Chile

When to visit: November to April

Why it is a go to destination: It is known for its wilderness that is best explored by foot. Located at the bottom of the Southern hemisphere, touring Patagonia is unlike anywhere else in the world. Whales, penguins, scenic mountain snow tops and visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier are just a few of the exciting attractions you will see as you plan a Fitz Roy trek. Exploring the well marked trails brings you to hike upon the tall and empowering glaciers as well as schedule a horseback ride across Patagonia. The possibilities are endless.

Name: Trek to Petra

Where is it located: Jordan

When to visit: March  – May (Spring)

Why it is a go to destination: It has been recognized by National Geographic Adventure as one of the  World’s Best Hikes, in a secret city abandoned by the Romans after major earthquakes. Found by a Swiss explorer in the 1800’s, now Petra is one of the seven wonders in the world and a traveler’s dream. Viewing the Treasury is the main attraction, which was a tomb for a king along with walking through the Bab As Siq surrounded by monuments and tombs. How can you not add this mysterious destination to your list?

Name: Everest Base Camp trek

Where is it located: Nepal

When to visit: October to December

Why is it a go to destination:  This is perhaps the most famous and the ultimate trek for any hiker. It is grueling and can take roughly 19 days. Arriving in Kathmandu, you will see some of the best scenery in the world as you explore the local villages. Before hiking Mt. Everest, you will set out at the base camp with smaller elevations such as Kala Patthar. Scheduling your trek is necessary along with being prepared…very prepared. You will be the ultimate hiker if you can accomplish this trek. It is still the highest mountain in the world
